Diabetes MCN Managed Clinical Networks in Scotland

scotland health boards mapManaged Clinical Networks (MCN) brings together patients, carers and health professionals from all disciplines to identify local needs and drive forward local priorities, adopting a patient centred approach to service development. Working in partnership to bridge traditional boundaries and examine the patient’s complete journey around the system, allowing to design a seamless care pathway for patients.  In each area there are various MCN’s, for example, Diabetes, Pain, Respiratory, Heart, and others. They may differ from area to area, however it is there are MCN’s for diabetes in all Health board areas.

The MCN for Diabetes is the driving force for local decision making around services and will lead on the delivery of NHS QIS standards working together to develop locally agreed protocols and pathways of care. The MCN will develop a clear policy for the dissemination of patient information and audit and ensure that all aspects of the service are openly evaluated to inform local decision-making arrangements.

They are strongly encouraged to have patient representation. Patient reps are able to feed back ongoing issues in their area and give a patient prospective on varies topics and issues. You will find some patient reps in our Facebook Group and if you are interested in getting involved do contact your local MCN.  One patient rep said ‘The topics discussed can seem pretty dry, and it is endlessly frustrating to hear that clinical staff know where the problems are but don’t have the resources to correct them, but it is worth engaging, if only because these people are trying to provide care for us as PWD and I personally think we should try to help them help us.’

If you wish to contact your local MCN, when possible email the MCN coordinator, failing that the manager or lead clinician, if details are available.
